The Houston Rockets have fired coach Kevin McHale after starting the NBA season 4-7. The rockets were expected to be championship contenders this year, but something just seems to be off. Apparently, the Houston brass thinks that McHale is the problem.
Assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff will be taking over as head coach for the time being. Even though he has no assurances, Bickerstaff will be given a chance to try and right the ship and earn himself the head coaching position. Some of the names that have been mentioned as possible replacements for McHale include Jeff VanGundy and Charlotte head coach Steve Clifford.
According to Rockets GM Daryl Morey, the decision was made because the team was simply not reacting to McHale, adding that he still believes that Houston has an excellent team. Many experts said that it seems like an overreaction. McHale was given a three-year contract extension in late 2014 and he former Boston Celtics star led Houston to two seasons in a row with more than 54 victories in the regular season.
