Darryl Dawkins was, without a shadow of doubt, one of the most unique characters in the history of the NBA. What can you say about a guy whose nickname Chocolate Thunder was given to him by Stevie Wonder and who at one point claimed he hailed from planet Lovatron where he mastered “interplanetary funkmanship”?
His best years came in Philadelphia where he played alongside another legend, Dr. J. and where the fans adored him. It was also in Philadelphia where he became famous for his backboard-breaking dunks that made the League change the constructions of the hoops.
His post-Philly career was plagued by injury, but Darryl still managed to post career numbers of 12.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 1.4 bpg. He was truly one in a million.
