After the dramatic victories that both Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori had in this US Open, fans would have expected a great final as well. But that didn’t happen, with Cilic coasting through a straight set victory to take the trophy.
Regardless of the seemingly easy victory for Cilic, taking all three sets with a score of 6-3, this was still one of the most interesting and unexpected US Opens in recent memory. On his way to the crown, Cilic knocked off Roger Federer, handling the tennis star quite easily.
Nishikori’s trip to the finals was a bit more eventful. He not only defeated tough opponents like Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka, but he was also able to defeat the top seed and favorite in the tournament, Serbian Novak Djokovic.
According to bookmakers and betting sites, this meeting between Nishikori and Cilic in the finals was one of the most improbable scenarios that no one could have predicted at the start of the tournament.
